Backyard Tourist: Best spots for Valentine’s Day on the Gold Coast

Yes, Valentine’s Day was yesterday — but if you were anything like me, you were probably stuck working. Here’s how you can celebrate the special day on the weekend instead.

YES, I realise Valentine’s Day was yesterday, but I was busy working.

And I’ll warrant most residents were too.

So what’s a girl to do? Celebrate Valentine’s Day at the weekend, of course.

Luckily, there are romantic spots across our beautiful city.

Let’s start with the Hinterland, because that’s where you can really spend some quality time away from the crowds with your loved one.

Mt Tamborine has many options when it comes to free things to do, as well as wonderful choices for a romantic night away.

During the day you can meander about the Gallery Walk with its boutique shops, check out the glow worms cave, hike some trails or even just catch the spectacular sunset from the Rotary Lookout.

Bonus points if you’ve packed a picnic for two during this trip.

There are multiple options for a romantic night away too, from motels and hotels to cottages and luxurious villas.

Of course, if getting away from the hustle and bustle isn’t your thing, there’s lots to do right along the city’s coastline.

YOU’VE heard about it, you’ve read about it and now it’s time to actually experience it with your significant other — the Burleigh Headland.

A walk around this area is the perfect way to start or end your day together.

It doesn’t matter which side you start your walk, it’s an easy pathway either way.

The area is famous for its stunning views of the ocean and the shoreline, so you won’t be left disappointed.

While the ocean will be a deep blue colour, chances are that Tallebudgera Creek next door will be a magical aqua.

Keep an eye out for water dragons too. There are always a few around enjoying the beautiful weather.

IF you’re keen to impress, booking you and your partner in at Justin Lane’s Pizzeria and Bar is bound to do the job.

The family-run business offers an array of Italian food including pizza, pastas, entrees and salads, and there’s no leaving the premises without feeling satisfied.

It’s a little more casual but a bit more hip ordering from the rooftop menu, which includes items such as pappardelle with wagyu bolognese or a meatball, chilli and mozzarella pizza.

For $39 per person in the main hub, the restaurant will also serve a banquet of mouth-watering dishes like seared scallops with snow pea tendrils or potato gnocchi with mushrooms, sage and ricotta.

WHILE YOU’RE THERE … DO

IF you’re sticking to the northern Gold Coast for your romantic weekend, the Fox and Hounds pub has got you covered.

Because it is an authentic English pub, you can expect some hearty meals for dinner and good quality beer on tap.

For the Valentine’s Day weekend they’ve got something a bit — um — different though: a murder mystery dinner on Saturday night.

For $85 a person, aspiring sleuths can attempt to work out the mystery, set in Chicago in the 1920s.

A three-course meal and a welcome drink are included.

Bookings are essential. Starts 6.15pm Saturday.
