SOUTHPORT tram goers can expect to be mobbed this morning – by swarms of flying ants.

The winged creatures were spotted by a commuter this morning bugging passengers at the Nerang Street stop.

The ants were climbing on signposts, the concrete and a Touch n Go screen.

One commuter said she had never seen so many before and they were a “plague”, annoying passengers using the trams.

She said one man had come close to the machine before realising the bugs were crawling over it and running away.

Other passengers who walked past collected the flying ants on their clothes, leaving them to swipe the insects away.

It is believed the recent rains have brought them out.
