ONE of the Gold Coast’s most popular restaurants has closed its doors.
Sparrow Eating House at Nobby Beach announced last night would be their last night of service.
Owned by Andrew Whiting, who also owns hugely popular Elk Espresso at Broadbeach, the side street haunt was this year voted in the Top 100 restaurants in Queensland by Delicious Magazine.
The venue announced news of its closure on Instagram yesterday, saying after three and a half years they would not be renewing their lease.
“Just wanted to say a huge good bye and thank you to everyone who has supported Sparrow over the last 3.5 years!” the post read.
“Tonight we are booked out and it was such a great feeling to end Sparrow on a high. “Unfortunately we decided not to re-sign our new lease.”
The post received almost 700 responses expressing shock and sadness at the news in less than a day.
The Bulletin has reached out to Mr Whiting for comment.
In the past three and a half years, the Nobby Beach strip has expanded hugely, adding a number of competitive evening venues including Fire Cue, Gemellini, Ally Chow, Grill’d and Hellenika rooftop to an already competitive mix, taking the total eateries up to more than 20 in 300m.
Sparrow was well regarded by foodies for their intricate seasonal menus and world class cocktails.
