TENS of thousands of shoppers are expected to spend up big on the Gold Coast at today’s Boxing Day sales.

Myer retail operations director Tony Sutton said the sale was the department store giant’s biggest trading day of the year. He urged Gold Coast customers to plan ahead.

“Top sellers across the Myer sale include women’s dresses and shoes, men’s business shirts, cookware and towels,” he said.

“On Boxing Day we will sell 20 business shirts a minute and more than 20,000 on day one so it’s the perfect time for men to update their work wardrobe.”

Pacific Fair’s senior marketing manager Kate Halpin said they were looking forward to the boost in customers during the holiday period.

“We’re likely to see triple our customer numbers on Boxing Day,” she said.

“As always we have increased parking staff across the centre and there are thousands of carparking spaces to make it easy for shoppers.”

David Jones regional manager Rowena Derksen said the retailers expected more than a million customers nationally today.

“In Queensland stores we’re expecting more than 185,000 customers,” she said.

Ms Derksen said if you’re are looking for a specific item, arrive at 9am sharp. Business shirts, bedding and designer shoes and accessories are the hottest items.

“Nationally, we expect to sell a million business shirts, 150,000 Lego sets, 70,000 small appliances and 55,000 dresses,” she said.

“Business shirts have been traditionally very popular over our clearance. Customers come in and buy armfuls.

“Other popular items include women’s shoes, handbags and manchester.”
