'This is your sign to shop at Costco': Mum's shopping haul comparison divides

The woman wandered through the wholesale store comparing prices to Woolies, but despite the big differences, some people didn't think her judgment was fair.

Costoco saving secrets: what this mum buys and avoids

An Aussie mum has taken to TikTok to share her savvy shopping secrets.

Louise Gibson, affectionately known as ‘That Money Mum’, meticulously compared prices between two major grocery giants, Costco and Woolworths, to show just how much shoppers can save.

Costco vs. Woolworths

Louise, a 29-year-old from Victoria, took her followers along on her weekly Costco shop, breaking down the cost differences between her favourite Costco items and the Woolworths equivalent.

"If you're not shopping at Costco, then this price comparison is going to show you why you really need to be," she began the clip.

  1. Kleenex Tissues: At Costco, a pack of eight Kleenex Tissues sets you back $19.49 ($2.43 per box). Meanwhile, Woolworths charges $3 for the same single box.
  2. Kleenex Toilet Paper: Costco wins again with its 60-roll pack priced at $29.50 (49 cents per roll). Woolworths, on the other hand, sells a 24-roll pack for $13.50 (56 cents per roll).
  3. Infuzions Veggie Straws: These lunch box snacks are a steal at Costco - just $1.60 each. But at Woolworths, they’ll set you back a whopping $4.78.
  4. Coke Cans: Louise snagged 34 cans of Coke at Costco for a cool $32.99. At Woolies, it would’ve cost her $47.20.
  5. Leggo’s Bolognese Sauce: At Costco, you can nab a pack of six 500g bottles for just $14.99 ($2.50 each). But over at Woolworths, customers pay a hefty $4.30 per bottle.
  6. Libra Ultra Thin Regular Pads: Louise stocked up on 120 pads for $20.99 (17 cents per pad). Meanwhile, Woolworths charges $6.40 for a ten-pack (64 cents per pad). "That is a literal joke," she said.

The mum's savvy shopping tips

Louise says she makes sure to shop smartly, avoiding items her family won’t finish before they expire.

Eggs and yoghurt fall into this category, so she skips them at the wholesale giant.

"We only get what we need because otherwise, it really doesn’t work out as cheaper, but this will save us money in the long run," she says.

And her final verdict after spending $148 at Costco? "I think the same would be more than $200 at Coles and Woolworths."

Commenters were divided

In the comments, not everyone was convinced it was a fair judgement.

"Plus the $100 of fuel to get there and the $60 for the membership..." one person pointed out.

"I feel like the savings aren't enough to warrant the subscription price, it doesn't even out," said a second.

But Louise replied: "We find it does - however, if you know another family who wants to shop there, you could always share one with them and half the cost."

"Most of those items go on sale at half price, so it’s definitely cheaper at Woolies if you are shopping efficiently," said another.

"We found for 90% of stuff, it was cheaper to buy it on sale at Coles/Woolies," agreed one viewer.
