How much better can Mecca get?
This week, Aussie mum Kat, on TikTok as @kitschsnitch, took to the app to share something she found out about Mecca’s shopping bags.
“Wanna hear a cool fact about Mecca bags?” the video began.
“I keep one of these bags or something like that in my bathroom just to put empty boxes and whatnot, and take it down to recycling.
“When I recycle a bag like this from another store, I need to pull the handles off because they’re usually made out of plastic or something. This is actually woven paper, so this is fully recyclable.
“It feels like a ribbon or something, but it is paper, so that can go in the recycle bin. How cool is that?”

'I had no idea!'
Commenters on the post responded in shock to the revelation, saying that this was news to them.
“I always rip those off! I had no idea!” one commenter said.
“Whaaaaaaaat omg THIS WHOLE TIME IT COULD HAVE BEEN RECYCLED?!” said another.
“I have never seen that before, what a great idea!” added a third.
However, according to Mecca, this is hardly new, with sustainability a significant part of their ethos.
"Our packaging has always been a huge part of the MECCA experience for our customers and so we’re constantly looking at new and innovative ways that we can introduce sustainable solutions, like these paper handles, that still feel luxe and bring our customers joy,” Stephanie Luelf, Mecca’s Head of Sustainability, told Kidspot.
It turns out that the paper handles, which both look and feel like fabric, were first introduced back in early 2022, with all of their shopping bags, gift boxes and online order packaging fully recyclable.
Currently, the brand is also trialing new sample pots in a small number of stores, which are made in Australia from recycled plastic.
