THE Hannant family make Keeping Up With The Kardashins look like child’s play.
Star Cowboys prop Ben Hannant’s sister Jess Bemrose, 29, and her partner Adam, 31, just welcomed their fourth child Charlotte at Tugun’s John Flynn Hospital.
The three-day-old is the 50th grandchild to nan Pamela, 67, and pop Ralph Hannant, 66.
That’s 25 boys and 25 girls.
The Christmases at Mr and Mrs Hannant’s Tallebudgera Valley property normally encompass foot traffic of more than 100 family relatives and tag-alongs.
“We have a Hannant family Christmas every second year, it’s compolsory to go,” Upper Coomera mum Mrs Bemrose said.
“With over 100 people and a few more ring-ins it’s more of an event.
“We used to actually hire venues for it.
“Now we share hosting it at our homes around the Gold Coast. Everyone is assigned to a different meat.
“We get together every single Sunday for a family dinner as well over an extra long table, and the same thing applies. Everyone needs to bring a plate.
“Normally about 30 of us can make it as most still live on the Coast. It’s our tradition.”
The oldest grandchild is 20, with the youngest little Charlotte at three days old.
Mrs Bemrose, who spoke to the Bulletin from the maternity ward yesterday, was one of 11 children growing up at a property in Bonogin.
They made their fun riding motorbikes and wrestling on the lawn.
“My parents loved children and I guess that’s rubbed off on all of us,” Mrs Bemrose said.
“We had a nice acerage.
“Now that I’m a mum I obviously notice the financial strain of having kids but my parents never made us feel like we went without.
“We all got along, we didn’t even need friends. We were all extremely competitive and sporty which has certainly been passed onto all our kids.”
The family rallied the troops for the Broncos and Cowboys NRL grand final in Sydney last year – which saw Ben’s Cowboys crowned premiers – and Mrs Bemrose said the cheering in the crowd was likely 90 per cent coming from the Hannant tribe.
“We all had to catch the train because we couldn’t fit in a car,” she said.
“We were ecstatic. It was definitely a huge highlight for the whole family.”
Most of the boys play footy like “uncle Ben” – who has six children – as well as AFL, triathlons, soccer, dancing and swimming.
“They’re going to be sport nuts,” Mrs Bemrose said.
“They’ve got no choice,” she laughed.
She said even though Mr and Mrs Hannant had experience the highs of welcoming a grandchild 49 times already, the 50th was still as emotional.
“They can’t wipe the smiles off their faces,” she said.
“They still get emotional.”
The Hannants will all get together this Sunday for a big family dinner so the tribe can meet their new member.
