IT’S official — Gold Coast parents are hooked on these baby names.

Charlotte and Oliver have come out on top as the most popular baby names on the Gold Coast for 2017.

Amelia and Mia are also favourites for girls along with Hudson and Noah for boys, according to the Queensland Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages.

Charlotte and Oliver took out the crown for the most popular baby names in Queensland for the third year straight after also topping the list in 2015 and 2016.

Oliver was the top boy’s name on the Gold Coast last year but it was Charlotte that’s been the big mover in 2017 — pipping Ava, Willow and Mia which finished higher for the city last year.

Social analyst David Chalke said the reason behind the popular names all boiled down to two things: the royal family and the bible.

Mr Chalke said Queenslanders would find the name Charlotte reappearing at the top for 2018 as well.

“Charlotte has been very popular for the past decade and lot of parents lean towards this name because they are inspired by the royal family and feminine authors such as Charlotte Bronte and Jane Austen,” he said.

“We are going to see more Matthews, Jacobs and Nathans because of the good book, people love traditional biblical names. They are strong runners for babies born in Anglican countries.

“But the royals are always going to be a consistent inspiration just because they are terribly fashionable.”

Mr Chalke said the trend was all about heritage and culture with short and unusual names not as popular any more.

“It’s quite obvious that the British tradition still runs throughout Australian names,” he said.

“The best way to see if a name sticks is to stand at the back door and yell the name inside the house. Many Australians will find if it can’t be turned into a nickname, it won’t work.”

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Yvette D’Ath said the names were an interesting insight into how Queenslanders felt about the royal family.

“Princess Charlotte of Cambridge was born in May 2015, so this could be a sign that her name is continuing to be a popular choice,” she said.

“It is always interesting to see the change in trends when it comes to baby names.

“For example, the names James and Henry were among the top 10 in 2015, and dropped off the top 10 list in 2016, but appeared among the most popular again in 2017.

“I must admit, I was also pleased to hear there were two babies named Yvette in 2017.

“It will be interesting to see where the baby name trends take us in 2018.”
