A new Miami fish and chip shop is making waves in the weight loss world for its keto version of the naughty takeaway food.
Opened only four weeks ago, The Jolly Roger has already netted a healthy fan base for its keto-friendly fish and chips, served as fish or prawns and zucchini chips crumbed in an almond meal batter.
The keto diet is a low carb, high fat eating plan designed to trigger the body into a metabolic state called ketosis, in which fat is burned for energy instead of carbohydrates.
The Jolly Roger owners Isa Ham and Emily Liu said the idea came from a friend who works at the Robina Village Cowshed.

“He’s known as the ‘keto butcher’,” Mr Ham said.
“He’s on the keto diet himself and he suggested keto fish and chips.
“We thought nobody probably is doing that around here, and we realised that nobody in the country is doing that either.”
Mr Ham said the dish had caught the attention of “keto influencers’’ across Australia, with some flying in especially to the Gold Coast to try it and post to social media.

“We had a couple of keto influencers in the last week. One flew in from Melbourne I believe to trial it,” he said.
“All that social media stuff has boosted our social media and the interest in what we’re doing. That’s snowballing day by day.”

The Jolly Roger in Mountain View Ave is the first venture for the couple, with Mr Ham giving up a 17-year corporate career to open the takeaway shop.
The eatery offers a variety of meals to suit other dietary requirements too, including vegans, vegetarians and gluten-free consumers, and serves Black Hops beers on tap.
“With the menu, what we wanted to do was shy away from the traditional fish and chip shop with that big front fridge full of dull, pre-crumbed, battered products,” Mr Ham said.
“We wanted to create a point of difference to the menu. We’ve created our own sauces like nam jim and garlic butter.

“We have a focus on healthy salads made fresh daily. There’s gluten-free friendly options, vegetarian options — our tofish is a tofu based product.
“There’s no Chiko Rolls here, no dim sums, no chicken nuggets. It’s pure, fresh seafood delivered to us every couple of days from local suppliers.”
