Government urged to crackdown on childcare

A MOTHER claims her toddler’s toe was “50 per cent” severed at a childcare centre owned by a Gold Coast-based business west of the city.

Mother-of-two Taylor Maddison claims her two-year-old son Harry sustained “substantial injuries” after his toe was jammed in a door at the childcare centre recently.

She also claims the centre failed to provide adequate first-aid to her son after they covered his toe in facial wipes.

The childcare centre is owned by G8 Education, based out of Varsity Lakes.

Ms Maddison posted to Facebook two days ago, writing she received a call from an educator at the centre “explaining she has closed his big toe in the door, the toenail seems to be lifted and there is a small cut and lots of blood and my son will need to be seen by a doctor.”

At work, Ms Maddison asked her sister to pick up her son, only to receive a phone call from her saying he was drifting in and out of consciousness, was shaking uncontrollably and had a lot of blood coming from the wound.

“I rushed from work to my child where we then discovered after pulling the baby wipes the centre placed over his toe (this is not a correct or legal action of first aid) that his big toe was 50 (per cent) detached,” she wrote.

“We immediately dialled 000 for assistance for an ambulance from home.

“We were rushed straight to Queensland children’s hospital (sic) ... for my son who obtained surgery to his left great toe for nail bed reconstruction, skin repair, cleaning and scrubbing of the toe before stitching it back together.”

Ms Maddison wrote that they would find out next week whether or not he had sustained any nerve damage, adding “my concern is the childcare centre never provided my son with proper first aid assistance and never contacted an ambulance from the centre directly.”

She claims her son is still in shock and emotional distress, crying each time they drive past the centre.

Both Harry and his brother, who both attended the centre, have been removed and relocated to another childcare centre.

In a statement provided to the Gold Coast Bulletin, a G8 Education spokesperson confirmed an incident occurred on September 16 where a “toddler’s toe was accidentally jammed in a storeroom door.

“The educator on duty immediately took action to apply first aid,” the statement read.

“Without delay, other team members lent their support to soothe and calm the child.

“The child’s parent was contacted immediately and the child was collected within 20 minutes of the accident occurring.

“The incident was reported to the relevant regulatory authority who are investigating.”

Ms Maddison has been contacted for further comment.
