‘Surely a mistake?’: Sydney sign causes chaos

A landmark that towers over a busy suburb has left many Aussies scratching their heads after it appeared to change without warning.

Others with the app pointed out the KFC icon on their phones had also “flipped”.

KFC has finally responded to the speculation online, explaining the sudden change to the its logo is to celebrate its partnership with cult TV show, Stranger Things.

The fast-food giant has launched a limited-edition menu item, dubbed the “Upside Down Double”, that it describes as “so uniquely delicious, it could only come from another dimension”.

The new burger features two Original Crispy fillets, sandwiching a soft bun in the middle, layered with crispy bacon, cheese, and KFC’s brand-new, “Stranger Sauce”.

The free two-day event run from November 28 to 29, with the themed restaurant offering Upside Down Doubles and KFC menu items revived from the 80s across two different sessions on each date.

“We’re absolutely thrilled to unite the passionate KFC and Stranger Things fandoms, not only through our immersive Hawkins Fried Chicken experience, but also by bringing the deliciously strange Upside Down Double to restaurants nationwide,” Vanessa Rowed, CMO at KFC Australia, said.

Some clued-in Aussies had guessed the upside down sign, which only appeared outside the one Sydney restaurant, could be connected to the upcoming fifth and final season of the Netflix series.

“Is it upside down as in the upside down of stranger things?” quizzed one.

“Do they have some sort of promotion with Stranger Things?” suggested another.

Stranger Things debuted in 2016 and quickly became one of Netflix’s most popular television series ever, with its fourth season alone amassing over 140.7 million views globally.

Rooted in 80s nostalgia, it boosted Kate Bush’s track Running Up That Hill into the Billboard Hot 100 chart for the first time in its 38-year history.

The series has also garnered over 70 awards worldwide including Emmys and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.

The highly anticipated fifth and final season will release later this year in three volumes at 12PM AEDT: four episodes on November 27, three episodes on Boxing Day and the finale on New Year’s Day.

Fans are invited to pre-reserve their free spot for Hawkins Fried Chicken, though walk-ins will also be accepted on both days.

The Upside Down Double is available from Tuesday 2nd December to Monday 5th January nationwide and is priced from $10.95.
