Brittany Hockley's journey through fertility challenges

She’s currently in the jungle on I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here! but in a new interview, Brittany Hockley has opened up about the latest on her plans for motherhood.

In an emotional sit-down with Stellar’s podcast, Something To Talk About, the former Bachelor star has revealed the outcome of her most recent round of IVF – after a previous attempt was unsuccessful.

“For six months there, I felt like I wasn’t going to be able to have a child … I did wait six months, until I mentally felt like I could go through it [an egg freezing cycle] again,” Hockley told Something To Talk About.

“I did it [IVF] again and my doctor said, let’s just go and put you in hypo ovarian syndrome, just on the cusp. She‘s like, I’m going to pump you full of so many hormones. And it was the worst three weeks of my life. It was so horrific.”

Her boyfriend, Swiss footballer Benjamin Siegrist, flew to Australia “for three days for the creation of the embryos,” Hockley revealed.

“I’m so lucky he was there to look after me because this is my fourth time.”

Hockley said she was in extreme pain and “couldn’t even sit down” during the physically demanding cycle.

“I couldn’t stand up. I was in that much pain because the hormone dose was so high.”

The 36-year-old said the IVF process resulted in “three genetically tested and, OK, embryos that are now in the freezer”.
While the Life Uncut podcast host said was “stoked” with the result, “three doesn’t mean anything, either”, she said. “Three could be one child. Three could be none. Three could be two. But it’s better than not having any.”

REAL REASON BRITTANY WENT ‘INTO THE JUNGLE’

It’s no easy task for Hockley to appear effortlessly cool. On the set with Stellar, the podcast and radio host may have been at ease in front of the camera, but the extreme heat of the day was doing its best to make things difficult.

“It was a wintry vibe, which wasn’t great for me given it was 40 degrees when we were shooting. It was like being in a sauna all day.”

Nonetheless, Hockley was trying to stay in the moment, especially as it was one of her last opportunities to be in glam mode for some time. That’s because the former Bachelor star is now in South Africa filming Network 10’s jungle-set reality TV series I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here!.

“For people who don’t know me, they probably think I don’t look like a rough-and-tough type of camper girl who’s happy going without make-up,” says Hockley, who co-hosts the KIIS Network show The Pick Up with Laura Byrne and Mitch Churi, and the podcast Life Uncut with Byrne, a fellow Bachelor alumnus.

“But that was my upbringing; we camped our whole life. My family were in the 4WD club, we just lived an outdoorsy life.

“I don’t think the lack of comfort will be the hardest thing,” the 36-year-old adds.

Although Hockley will miss her Swiss boyfriend, professional soccer player Ben Siegrist, her dog Delilah and her seven-step skincare routine, she has no hesitations about taking part in the show, given her mantra is to “say yes to opportunities that I get and may never get given again”.

Hockley is also eager to raise awareness and funds for RizeUp Australia, a charity that supports victims of domestic violence.

Thanks to her stints on the 2018 season of The Bachelor Australia and then 2020’s Bachelor In Paradise Australia, Hockley says she feels somewhat prepared for camp life because she understands how things work behind the scenes.

“Spoiler alert,” she says with a laugh, “in reality TV a lot of stuff goes on that people don’t get to see. But I don’t think anything could give you an advantage on this show, unless you eat worms every day.”

On that score, Hockley actually does have some experience.

“I went hiking in the Amazon forest with my sister and we camped with a local guide for two weeks, living off the land,” she explains.

“We caught and ate piranhas and had to eat coconut worms. And I wasn’t even doing it for charity. I paid for it myself.”

I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here! is currently airing on Network 10 and 10Play. For more from Stellar, listen to the podcast, Something To Talk About:
