A couple have been left repulsed after buying a new Kmart microwave only to learn the hard way it had already been used by someone else.
They came to the disturbing realisation after popping open the door to find a container with what appeared to be an unsightly collection of green mould inside.
The foul find was later shared to Facebook by the peeved shopper, who said her husband brought the microwave home without realising what was inside.
“My husband purchased this microwave from Kmart. When he opened it and went to use it, he found a mouldy food container in it,” she wrote.
“Absolutely disgusting and so unhygienic. I can’t believe Kmart wouldn’t even check the state of a product when it’s returned.”
She shared a video of the moment the pair realised they weren’t the first to use the appliance.
“This is my brand new microwave from Kmart. All new, still has the stickers and everything on it,” her husband said.
“Opened it up, and that’s what’s inside it,” he said, pulling out a white container with unknown contents.
“Obviously someone’s returned it, and they’ve not taken their container out.
Dozens of fellow Kmart shoppers responded to the video saying they too would be unimpressed if they found someone’s old container in an item that was supposed to be new.
“Gross! Kmart should look into this because it’s so wrong,” one person wrote in a comment.
“They should not be selling second hand stuff as new,” another said.
“I’d take that back and put a huge complaint in. How disappointing and disgusting,” a third wrote.
Others shared similar experiences in comments to the post, with one woman saying she once purchased a new food processor that was coated in oil and smelled of curry.
“I got a cordless vacuum from Kmart with no charging cord and it was full of dust and hair,” someone else said.
While most agreed it was unacceptable that Kmart sold a microwave that had obviously been used previously, some argued it was implausible for staff to thoroughly check every returned item.
“It would have been returned and probably sealed back in the box … customers do dodgy stuff and staff don’t have the time to be checking,” one wrote.
“Some customer has probably sealed this up and told staff it’s not been taken out of the box,” another said.
Kmart has been contacted by news.com.au for comment.
