A Gold Coast social media influencer has hit back at online critics after receiving an angry message about her “mistakes”.

Ashy Bines who gained one million followers on Instagram over a decade, said she hoped people would not judge influencers by their mistakes.

“I got this message from one girl and she was like ‘You’ve done this wrong and you’ve done that wrong and you once said this and you responded like this’ and she really expressed her anger towards me,” Bines said.

“I just said “yeah you’re right I definitely have made mistakes in the past and I’ve reacted or responded in a way that I am not proud of and I’ve said things that I shouldn’t have said but the way people learn is by making mistakes and I honestly own all of my mistakes.

“One of my biggest points I was trying to make is that we are all human and we all do make mistakes.

“I can only talk for myself but having a platform where hundreds of thousands of people watch you every single day is pretty scary sometimes.”

A popular Instagram account called @Aussieinfluenceropinions shared Bines’ story and formed an open discussion on the topic which received more than 200 comments.

One reader said: “Definitely disagree. If you have a platform, especially one where you make a commercial profit, then of course you should be held to a higher standard. Just like there are special laws regarding those with more ‘power’ in certain situations.”

Another agreed. “But you don’t continually get to make the same mistakes over and over again in a normal job,” they said.

However Bines only received supportive comments on her recent post, where she said “the online world nearly killed her”.

“Have loved seeing you share so much of yourself and always learning and growing and sharing love in your community,” a follower said.
