Man of many talents: Travis Fimmel on acting, Travla beer and the Gold Coast Open

Travis Fimmel - the star of Vikings, Boy Swallows Universe and the original face of Calvin Klein - has been spruiking his new business venture. SEE THE VIDEO

Vikings acting star Travis Fimmel is frothing – his Aussie beer label, the Gold Coast Open surf contest and latest on-screen hit Boy Swallows Universe.

Fimmel, an original Calvin Klein underwear model, was among the crowds at a packed Burleigh beachfront and hill stretch on Saturday spruiking his homegrown lager beer brand Travla.

“The guys are ripping it, great surf, come down and be a part of it – drink some beers, drink whatever you want, bring the family,” he said on day two Saturday ahead of the Sunday.

Asked about what prompted him to have a crack at the beer business, the down-to-earth star casually dressed in a backwards cap and Livin mental health charity T-shirt, joked: “Stupidity, mostly stupidity.

“No – it’s me and a bunch of my country mates where I’m from - farm boys and that - so trying to be an Australian owned beer, there’s not many around anymore.”

Fimmel said the Gold Coast Open by Surfing Queensland was a wonderful contest and “great event to be a part of”.

Boy Swallows Universe, out on Netflix and based off the novel by Brisbane-based journalist turned author Trent Dalton, stars Fimmel as heroin-dealing stepfather Lyle.

Fimmel said of its success: “I’m so happy for everyone involved in Boy Swallows Universe. The kids did an amazing job. Lee (Tiger Halley) and Felix (Cameron) and I’m just happy for those boys.”

Asked how his surfing was, he said: “I can’t surf, it’s embarrassing.”
