IT’S a dream come true for fans of big cats and people worldwide eager to see tigers survive.

Two tiger cubs have been born at Dreamworld after an anxious 100-day wait.

Tiger Island’s 14-year-old Nika gave birth to two healthy female cubs on January 24 at 9.40am and 10.50am, the first cubs born at Dreamworld since 2015.

After the 100-day gestation period, the blue-eyed cubs weighed 1.4kg and 1.6kg respectively when born.

They have yet to be named.

Less than one week on, general manager of life sciences Al Mucci said the cubs were doing well and they were stacking on about 100g each day.

“We’re pretty happy and excited about the two new cubs,” he said.

“They’re feeding well and they’re growing well. Everything is growing, their teeth, their claws.”

Mr Mucci said the larger birth weights meant he expected the pair to weigh up to 150kg once fully grown and the second cub born could be one of the heaviest they had bred.

Most tiger cubs born weigh about 1.4kg.

Mr Mucci said the cubs would be part of an interactive educational program on Tiger Island but once fully grown, could be moved to another Australasian zoo under the Global Species Program.

He said while the cubs could eventually become mothers themselves, their father, 15-year-old Raj, had sired a number of litters so the family line was already prolific throughout the captive-bred population.

“There’s less than 4000 tigers in the wild,” he said.

“These two beautiful cubs will be fantastic global ambassadors for their endangered cousins in the wild.”

The two cubs will remain in their nursery den for the next two weeks, with their first public appearance scheduled for later this month.
