Three cats allegedly drowned in Gold Coast waterways in past month

Three cats — including two kittens — appear to have been purposely drowned in two separate incidents on the Gold Coast.

THREE cats appear to have been purposely drowned in two separate incidents on the Gold Coast in the six weeks.

Two kittens were found drowned in a crab pot at Monterey Keys just six weeks ago, while a third cat was found dead in a cat trap along the Coomera River at Hope Island one month ago.

The owners of the deceased cats and their children have been left devastated after the horrific deaths of their pets.

One woman, who declined to be named, told the Bulletin her family’s two kittens, both aged six months, were thought to be have been taken from their backyard, which backs onto Saltwater Creek at Monterey Keys.

Cotton Candy and Stussy were missing for nearly two days before they were found drowned in a crab pot attached to their jetty.

She said it was highly unlikely the deaths of the pair were accidental because they didn’t venture beyond a steep drop and temporary fence installed in their yard.

“Our cats didn’t go on the jetty because it’s unstable, they’re really scared of it,” she said.

“We can’t even coax the cats onto there with food.

“Only one crab pot was attached by a chain to the jetty, so you could find it … the other one you could have thrown into the water and never have found it.

“We were in absolute shock when it happened, it’s awful.”

She said her three children, as well as her flatmate’s child, were very protective of their one remaining cat — it wasn’t even allowed into the backyard any more.

RSPCA INSPECTOR SHARES HEARTBREAKING STORIES OF COAST CASES

More recently, a third cat was found drowned in a cat trap.

It appeared to have been drowned in the Coomera River, close to the proposed retirement village development along Sickle Ave.

While it is unclear how the cat was found, its owner posted to Facebook saying the male cat, which lived on their Shinnecock Close property, had been purposely killed.

“Killing a cat like he was killed is a criminal offence,” she wrote.

“Cruelty to animals is despicable. This was my cat, he was the most gentle little soul … This person that killed my cat is obviously not of sound mind.”

Other social media users were shocked to hear of the cat’s death.

“Oh my god, that’s sickening. Sorry to read this. No animal deserves that sort of cruel treatment,” one person wrote.

RSPCA spokesman Michael Beatty confirmed one cat drowning on the Gold Coast had recently been reported to the peak body and was being investigated.

There have been 900 complaints of animal cruelty to the RSPCA in the city so far this year.

He urged others to come forward if there was any more instances they were aware of.

Mr Beatty advised keeping cats inside, adding they should not be allowed to wander off properties.

Under Gold Coast city regulations, cats must stay within the confines of the owner’s yards.
