Snake mating season kicks off on Gold Coast and Tweed

Gold Coast residents run a high risk of encountering an unsettling scene if they venture into roof spaces at any time over the next few weeks.

BEWARE the slithering in the ceiling as snake mating season wriggles into action across the Gold Coast.

Amorous snakes are out and about seeking a mate, and are more likely to be spotted in homes and back yards across the Tweed and Gold Coast, say experts.

Mating season arrived a few weeks late this year but is now in full swing, according to Gold Coast Snake Catcher’s Tony Harrison, who said increased snake activity could be expected for the next 10 weeks.

“Common sense will go out the window,” he said.

“Males with a one-track mind will travel to find (a mate), day and night, out in the open. They don’t care about anything but getting to her first.”

Mr Harrison said fights were likely to break out when males were competing for the attentions of a female.

“We will hear the rumble in our roof spaces. You will see the boys wrestling on your front lawn. Because of this we get a lot of calls because snakes get seen by a lot of people,” he said.

Last mating season Mr Harrison was called out to remove around 170 snakes in September and 180 during October.

“Most of what we’ll get right now is carpet pythons and eastern browns,” he told the Bulletin.

Mr Harrison said snakes were no more aggressive during mating season, but were more likely to come into contact with humans.

Miami resident Codie Scott found an impressive snake, believed to be a carpet python, in her back yard on Tuesday.

“He was amazing to watch,” she said.

“He went back into the bush on his own (after a while).”

Mr Harrison said residents who found an unwelcome house guest could call the Gold Coast Snake Catcher 24/7 on 0401 263 296.
