SEA World’s three-month-old polar bear cub has finally emerged from her den, taking her first steps toward public life by exploring ‘Cub Kindy’.
The gorgeous ball of white fluff reached the next stage of her development when she and doting mum Liya left their dark den, which has been home to the pair since the cub was born at the Gold Coast theme park in May.
The specially-designed ‘cub kindy’ is an area in Polar Bear Shores which allows the cub to develop her life skills and explore new substrates including shaved ice.
She’s been spotted playing with mum on the ice, tasting her first solid foods and messing around with toys.
Cub Kindy is still ‘back of house’ and cannot be viewed by the public.
She is expected to move to ‘Polar Pre-School’ in late August/Early September where she’ll make her public debut.
Sea World marine sciences director Trevor Long said the cub was becoming more inquisitive and playful each day.
“The first time the cub saw Cub Kindy, she was a little nervous, but after watching and learning from mum her confidence grew and she began to dig, run and play in the ice and is now starting to spend more time out there,” he said.
“The cub has also been introduced to her first toys in Cub Kindy and she’s taken a real shine to a small ball which she enjoys playing with and chasing around the ice, keeping Liya on her toes.
“She is continuing to grow significantly in size and is now starting to interact with solid foods including fish, meat and pork and it won’t be long until she makes her public debut.”
Sea World is still taking votes from the public to help name the cub with more than 20,000 votes already cast.
The name ‘Mishka’ is currently the frontrunner.
