Black Swan Lake - Filling Commences

A MOTHER duck with her babies in tow, stranded in an increasingly disappearing lake.

This is the heartbreaking reality as Black Swan Lake is today filled in.

The ducks swam around in shallow water as workers continue to fill in Bundall’s ‘borrow pit’ — dubbed Black Swan Lake.

In a photo shared by Lisa Forrest, the mother duck, spotted with eight babies trailing behind her, can be seen swimming in a shallow pool.

Some fauna at the lake has been relocated before the works started and an on-site spotter remains to keep watch on birds which fly close to the construction zone.

Ms Forrest also shared a video where a western swamphen can be seen foraging in the foreground as excavators work behind them.

Filling in for the lake began on Tuesday after months of campaigning by local residents to avoid getting rid of the freshwater lake.

The Gold Coast Bulletin also revealed filling in of the lake had been fast-tracked by Mayor Tom Tate after issuing a “watching brief” on Black Swan Lake to his chief-of-staff.

The lake is being filled in despite the sighting of a vulnerable and protected migratory bird, the Latham’s Snipe.

Video shot by Bryan Foster also shows a number of birds continuing to use the lake today, including six larger white birds and some smaller ones.

Fish had been trawled out of the lake in the days prior.

The People United Gold Coast’s page shows resident’s anger over the filling in, with local Sally Jones posting: “Go go go save the lake. The average person needs this win, for this so wrong on (sic) so many ways.”

Nicki Odenbriet wrote: “If it was a ‘toxic pit’ there wouldn’t be such an abundance of wildlife living in or around it.”
