MIGALOO, the white whale, is just hours from reaching the Gold Coast after being spotted at Byron Bay this afternoon.
The extremely rare whale, who is on his northern migration to Far North Queensland, was a hot attraction in northern NSW this afternoon as he passed Cape Byron at about 2pm.
With light quickly fading today, it appears Migaloo will slink past the Gold Coast under the cover of darkness.

Whale enthusiast Oskar Peterson, founder of Migaloo.com and the whale’s official twitter account said he expected the famous whale to pass the Gold Coast around midnight.
“He really is a living legend. He’s 28 years old and is still just as powerful a swimmer as he always was. He travels around 7km an hour with a pod of black whales,” he said.
“Whales usually live between 50 and 80 years - so he’s definitely still in his prime.
“He has travelled the entire NSW coast in exactly a week, he’s right on schedule.”
