A HUGE python has eaten a family’s pet dog and attempted to swallow its chain in northern NSW.

A snake which swallowed a beloved family pet near Lismore is digesting its meal on the Gold Coast.

The snake – with the poor pooch’s chain still dangling out of its mouth, was discovered on Thursday before being transferred to Currumbin Wildlife Hospital Friday afternoon.

The hospital’s chief vet, Doctor Michael Pyne, said the snake may require surgery to remove the unfortunate canine’s chain from its stomach.

“But first we’ll just keep him under observation for a couple of weeks until he digests his meal,” he said.

Dr Pyne said he had never come across anything like it before.

“It’s certainly tragic for the dog and upsetting for its owners, but unfortunately it was probably the same size as a possum, which is exactly the size of animal these animals would normally prey on.”

EARLIER: A huge python has eaten a family’s pet dog and attempted to swallow its chain.

On Thursday morning the dog’s owner went out into the backyard of her Caniaba home in northern NSW to check on the Chihuaha-Maltese cross only to discover the 2.5m python in the kennel.

The python, believed to be about 50 years old, had a bulge in its belly and the dog’s chain sticking out of its mouth.

Crew from WIRES Northern Rivers were called to the scene. They cut the chain and then monitored the python for 24-hours to see whether it would regurgitate the chain. It didn’t and was taken for veterinary treatment. it is now in the care of WIRES.
