PARROTS usually make themselves at home in trees, but one anxious macaw knew it was not where she wanted to be this afternoon.
Two firefighting crews spent an hour today rescuing — not a cat — but the pet bird which was stuck up a tree in Labrador.
Neighbour Kim Easterbrook saw the commotion through her window and ran outside to watch the rescue from her balcony, which started at 1.50pm.
“I thought it was a cat at first,” Ms Easterbrook said.
“You don’t expect it to be a macaw.
“They tried the first time with the ladder but that didn’t work. Then the second truck came in with the higher ladder and rescued it.
“It was so amazing to watch, I was very impressed with the professionalism and care of the firefighters.”
The macaw is said to have escaped its enclosure in its owner’s apartment and flew out of a window in to a tree.
Southport Fire Crew used the telescopic ladder platform — similar to a cherry picker — and a net to successfully retrieve the bird.
Southport Fire and Rescue said the seven-month-old, hand-reared macaw appeared quite anxious and wouldn’t have easily made its own way down.
Ms Easterbrook said a crowd of onlookers cheered when the macaw was successfully brought down and returned to its owner, waiting nearby.
“There was a whole lot of people cheering and clapping,” Ms Easterbrook said.
“It was a beautiful bird.”
