DOLPHINS have migrated inland as far as Nerang in search of food following one of the driest Coast summers on record.

Pods of the normally ocean-dwelling mammals have been spotted in waterways across the city at Biggera Waters, Mermaid Waters and even inland on the Nerang River.

An eagle-eyed Bulletin reader snapped a picture of the playful creatures on Dunlop’s Canal this week near Pacific Fair at Broadbeach.

Dolphins were also spotted as far south as Miami.

Sea World marine sciences director Trevor Long said the dry conditions and lack of substantial rain made the Gold Coast’s man-made canals and rivers an ideal location for dolphins to find some food.

“Normally, we have a lot of rain during the monsoonal season but with it the canals are much saltier than normal and therefore ideal for them to go fishing,” he said.

“Despite what some people may believe, these dolphins are not lost at all.

“ In fact, they are highly intelligent.

“Until we get decent rain they are unlikely to be making any kind of move towards returning to the ocean.”

Mr Long urged canal residents and boaties to avoid interacting with the creatures.
