RSPCA officers are investigating claims of animal cruelty in a Gold Coast suburb after a cat was taken to a vet with a rubber band wrapped around its neck.

Photos have appeared on social media of the cat, showing cuts and injuries to its neck.

There are fears — unsubstantiated — that other pets in the Ormeau area might have been similarly targeted.

The pictures appeared on the Vet Lounge Facebook page after a distressed Ormeau family took their ragdoll cat to a vet when they realised a rubber band had been wound tightly around its neck.

“A sad story today but one that must be told so you can watch out if you live in the Ormeau area,” the post read.

“Kitty was brought into the practice by his owners after finding a rubber band around his neck.

“Being a ragdoll cat with a lot of hair, his parents couldn’t see it until it ended up cutting into his skin.”

The post claimed this was not the only injured animal in the area.

“After talking to some of the neighbours, they found that their cat was not the only one this had happened to. Someone in the area has been putting rubber bands around cats’ necks.

“What a revolting thing to do to an animal. If you are in the Ormeau area and have a fluffy cat, keep an eye out.

“The good news is that Kitty will make a full recovery.”

RSPCA spokesman Michael Beatty confirmed officers were aware of the incident.

“We are investigating the circumstances around this incident,” Mr Beatty said.

“There is no evidence at this stage to say that other cats have had rubber bands put around their necks. If it was a human who did this deliberately it would be taken very seriously.

“If anyone does have any information, please come forward.”
