WHEN Roxy was abandoned by her owner, she waited for him by his broken-down car on the side of the highway.
She sat there waiting in the December heat until locals took her to the pound.
More than a year later, her owner still hasn’t picked her up.
Roxy was taken in from the pound by Animal Rescue Queensland, an organisation that rehomes animals that would otherwise have to be put down.
For ARQ, many of the dogs rescued often have heartbreaking stories.
Another dog up for adoption, Blondie, was found at a puppy farm, while Jazz was found chained up with her brother.

ARQ is searching for families to take care of Roxy, Blondie and Jazz, who are all currently in foster care.
ARQ marketing co-ordinator Kisharn Worsley said stories like Roxy’s were not uncommon.
“Unfortunately, it’s more common than not.
“We do get a lot of dogs that have been to the pound but we also get dogs that come from loving families moving interstate or moving premises.”
Ms Worsley said they moved animals into temporary foster homes before finding a permanent home.
“Normally we can rehome the majority of the dogs that come through within a week but in some situations we request extensions from the pound if we’re unable to find somewhere.”
She said it was more difficult to find homes for larger dogs because they needed suitable backyards.
To help with rehoming pets, ARQ provides a meet and greet between the foster and adopting family and works with professional trainers for behaviour issues.
Positive adoption stories are then shared on the ARQ Facebook page. “We do encourage our supporters to share their stories and let us know how it’s going.”
