A MOLENDINAR man who nearly lost his best friend to a dog attack is urging owners of aggressive dogs to keep them properly contained.
Luke Mills was walking his beagle Samuel “Sammy” Joseph along Macquarie Street in Molendinar when an aggressive dog escaped from a garden and attacked them both.
“There are two aggressive dogs at a particular house on that street and as we walked past one of the dogs slid its gate open and came charging at us,” Mr Mills said.
“He was attacking Sammy and I jumped on top of my dog because he’s all I’ve got.
“Then the dog started attacking me.
“Luckily there was a woman driving down the road who stopped her car and started screaming at the dog to stop and it ran away.
“I just sat on the ground hysterical, holding my dog pressing the wound where blood was pouring out.”
Sammy had five puncture wounds that required immediate attention.
Mr Mills, an epileptic unable to drive, was helped by neighbours who drove him to the vet.
He spent every last cent he had to pay for Sammy’s treatment and the next day came close to losing his best mate again when Sammy wouldn’t take his medication.
DECLARED DANGEROUS DOGS SUBJECT TO 16 COMPLAINTS
“The next day he was really, really sick and wasn’t eating his pain meds,” Mr Mills said.
“The vet said if the pain is that bad and he’s not improving he’d have to be euthanised.”
Luckily, Sammy survived.
Mr Mills contacted the owners immediately, but they denied even owning dogs.
After detailing the ordeal on Facebook, Mr Mills found there were many others who also claimed to witness dangerous or intimidating dog behaviour at the house.

A Gold Coast City Council spokesman said dog attacks are serious matters and an investigation into this matter is ongoing.
“The City’s Animal Management Officers responded immediately to the reported attack and have commenced an investigation,” they said.
“The City takes dog attacks very seriously and will address any breaches identified appropriately.
“We remind all owners to ensure that their dogs are kept securely on their property and are under adequate control when in public places.”
