2021 is coming to a close which means it is time for the annual Peter Flowers and Regina King Yoo Hoo awards.
Here are the first seven:
Open and Shut Award
When Instagram prankster Shammi Prasad, with his brothers Jayden and Kailash, opened Memory Lane in Broadbeach in January, the hope was that it would become the new Insta hot spot. Sadly, for reasons yet to be disclosed, it was a case of now you see it, now you don’t. After the opening night party the venture faded from sight virtually overnight with various claims about excessive noise from residents nearby and counter claims about unfair treatment.
Colourful Clobber Award
In February, iconic Australian designer Camilla Franks held a private showing of her latest Camilla range at Maman Restaurant, Burleigh Heads. The clothes were spectacular, the guests were soooo good looking it was criminal but above that was the sheer exuberance of Camilla herself who, despite recent health issues, fizzes with energy and good vibes.
It’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll Award
It’s difficult to believe it has been 25 years since the Hard Rock cafe first set up shop on the corner of Cavill Ave. Jimmy Barnes opened proceedings back then and on the silver anniversary in March, Thirsty Merc and Shannon Noll got the party well and truly started. As it should, the party raged long into the night.
Supercharged Award
With any big event the problem for organisers was always would they be able to proceed safely. Thankfully one of our favourite happenings, Supanova, did manage to get frocked up at GCCEC. We have no idea who most of the costumed folk are but those who do attend are so enthusiastic about getting into character it is a joy to do.
Magic Mike Award
The Gold Coast Fashion Project has a plan to bring back a Fashion Week for the city. To help get things started a function was held at Surfers Paradise Golf Club in May. Besides the ideas and strategy, it was hard to miss the abs and friendly attitude of Mystic. Now if only more men would embrace their exotic side.
Art for Art’s Sake Award
The plans and artists drawings for the multi-coloured HOTA Gallery had us breathlessly waiting to see what the finished product would be like when it was finally completed. In May the big day arrived and amid much fanfare what is hoped to be a cultural drawcard was opened with a flourish. The highlight was a giant Champagne glass tower which was filled to overflowing by Michael Zavros, Tracey Cooper-Lavery, Tom Tate and Criena Gehrke.
The Ho Ho Award
Who else but us? Those who are aware of our history will know that we have done a slightly cracked Christmas card for more decades than we care to declare. Here is this year’s offering, our slightly warped dedication to the medical staff who have battled so diligently during the pandemic. From Dr Jabber Butt and Nurse Catchit, thank you for having fun with us throughout the year. Hope you had a wonderful Christmas and have a healthy, happy 2022 and we will see you out and about somewhere, sometime.
