Peter and Regina’s Inside Word: NRL star and wag Kirk Reynoldson, Kate Morgan, radio personality Simon ‘Baggs’ Baggs
Need to unscramble your life? NRL star-turned entrepreneur Krik Reynoldson has the answer, while one of our most recognisable voices heads south. Catch up on the Inside Word.
Peter & Regina
Don't miss out on the headlines from Peter & Regina. Followed categories will be added to My News.
Rugby league at its core has a simple premise – crash or crash through.
Kirk Reynoldson, a former NRL player for the Storm, Knights and Dragons, has channelled that approach to a new tech venture with his wife Kate Morgan (pictured).
The product is an app called Eggy – life unscrambled – and was born out of the frustration of trying to find something that would help to digitally organise the couple’s life, balancing three young children and busy careers.
“Everything we looked at was either too complicated or simply didn’t work,” explained Kirk.
“Then we had a light bulb moment about creating something that was suited to busy, non-tech savvy people like us. Kate has a communications and research background with a PhD in dietetics, while my life after football has been in construction followed by a finance and economics degree.
“It’s taken us about three years to get to this point. We had people who tried to talk us out of it because they knew the challenges we were going to face. It’s been a hard slog until now but we’re in the market and firing.
“We’ve been asked what happens if it doesn’t work out but we say ‘there is no Plan B’.”
That all-or-nothing approach has been backed by their friends, family and other busy people who relate to the problem and believe in what they are trying to create.
“We’ve had a really successful crowd-funding campaign. It helped us raise the funds to get the app built and out there. Also, we won a competition to spend three months with Suncorp which was a huge help.
“We did so much research before we even started building the app and had people breaking down in tears because of how much life admin weighs them down.”
Has it been worthwhile? “It’s been hard work and long hours – the toughest thing we’ve ever done – but the feedback has been amazing and while it’s only in Australia at the moment we’re getting requests from people overseas who have heard about Eggy.”
Who says you can’t unscramble an egg?
BAGGS PACKS HIS BAGS
More than 20 years of talking on air for a living are coming to an end for local radio star Simon “Baggs” Baggs.
“I’ve been hosting the number one drive show on Hot Tomato for the last two years and the opportunity was presented to work in podcasting for ACast, a Swedish-based company,” said Baggs.
“It means my wife Juliia and I will have to move to Sydney. There will be a lot more travel, both domestic and international, but I’m looking forward to the challenge. I love the Gold Coast – it is my home town – but this is such a great opportunity to move into a rapidly growing market.
“My role is the senior development manager creator network and as podcasting is the next big thing I couldn’t be more excited. Over my time in radio I’ve met and worked with some incredible people and learnt so much but the timing for this just felt right. Sydney here we come!”
MANIFEST A MEDIA DREAM
If you believe in the power of manifestation then you will love this story about born and bred Gold Coaster Candice Dianna.
A talented singer, pianist, writer and performer, she has long harboured a desire to get involved in music for TV or film and now it is about to become a reality.
“It is such an amazing thing,” explained Candice. “Michael Abdallah has created a TV show called Project You which is a transformational reality show. The idea is to inspire participants and viewers to create their own personal version of success in whatever form that may take.
“The show will follow people on their emotional journeys as they are guided from a place of deep personal struggle to a healthier physical, mental and spiritual state.
“By chance, he heard some of my songs which are about real life situations and said they aligned with what the show is about. I had 10 songs done, which he loved, but he wanted two more so I recorded Rise, an old song of mine, and put his lyrics for the theme song Project You to melody.
“To hear them with the orchestrations for the show has been inspiring for me because it really brings to life the messages I am trying to convey.”
The shows are all done and local and international networks are in discussions about buying them.
“Music has always been my calling since I was about five years old and performing at Sunday school. This has been a dream come true and I can’t wait to write more music for Season 2 and then get out and perform them in front of an audience.”
If you want to hear Candice’s music they are available on every streaming service. PIC
Remember When
Today we go back to 2015 and “Aussie” Joe Bugner pictured here with Laura Lydall, who was at that time one of the famous Ultra-Tune models.
They both shared Max Markson as an agent and Laura had professed a desire to do boxing as part of her fitness regimen, so Max rang Joe.
There was a bit of consternation at the beginning because Laura didn’t want to break any of her finger nails, which caused a teeny eye-roll from Joe, but ever the good sport he gloved her up and away they went.
Joe had a truly remarkable career, fighting Muhammad Ali twice over 15 rounds as well as other famous fighters such as Joe Frazier, Ernie Shavers and Henry Cooper.
His career consisted of 83 fights from 1967 to 1999 and he is the oldest boxer to ever win a world title under the WBF banner at the grand old age of 48.
The Ultra-Tune ads created enormous controversy but Laura answered the critics thus. “Surely as independent, strong women, we are allowed to choose without fear of prejudice or hurtful judgments about what we wear, how we look and the form of work we choose?”
