A popular baby name has fallen out of favour, making way for a new Aussie favourite, recent data has revealed.

Isla has taken the number one name for girls for the first time in Victoria, according to The Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages Victoria, which recently unveiled its top 100 popular baby names for 2024.

As a result, Amelia dropped to third place after just a year in lead position, while Charlotte held second place, the Herald Sun reported.

Also in the top 10 were Mia, Hazel, Olivia, Matilda, Grace, Ella and Lily.

A total of 389 little girls in Victoria were named Isla, beating Charlotte (382) and Amelia (380).

The name’s surge in popularity follows national data which saw Isla take out the top spot nationwide last year, McCrindle’s 2024 Australian Baby Names report revealed.

There was less drama in the boy department, with Oliver retaining the top spot for the 11th year in a row.

Behind Oliver on the list of most common boy names for the past year was Noah, Henry, Leo, Theodore, Luca and Charlie.

Theodore had a big boost in popularity in 2024, jumping from spot 14 to four, while Muhammad and Xavier made the top 20 instead of Alexander and Sebastian, according to the Herald Sun.

The new Victoria list comes after it was revealed Aussies are shunning long names in favour of shorter variations. Charles, a boys name that was particularly popular in the 90s and early 2000, dropped in popularity last year nationwide, while the abbreviated version Charlie has shot up dramatically.

Similarly, Ollie – a shortened nickname for Oliver – has also debuted on the McCrindle list, cementing the new trend.
