‘My sister wants me as an egg donor but expects me to drop everything for her’

“While I understand they’re in a rush, why should I be expected to pay for my travel and only do it at their convenience?”

7 surprising fertility facts

The relationship between sisters Georgia* and Julia* has been difficult for years.

Despite being blood-related, Julia always looks down on her sister and makes disparaging comments about her life.

But it hasn’t stopped Georgia from loving her sister and helping her when she needs it most. Julia and her husband have been trying to get pregnant for years but have had no luck.

Even trying treatments like IVF have resulted in no joy, leaving them running out of options.

“My sister wanted me to come to the IVF clinic ‘in a day’, but I live in another city”

“I’ve been empathetic of this very huge concern, and I get it: it is hard,” Georgia shared on Reddit

To “bypass” IVF treatments, Julia asked Georgia to donate an egg to them, “which I very readily agreed to do.”

Julia was thankful that her sister would be happy to donate one of her eggs, but the request “came with a caveat.”

“They wanted me to come ‘in a day’,” Georgia said. She lives in another city in the US which she can only reach by flying.

The flight to and from her sister would take longer than six hours, meaning she’d have to take a day off work to get there.

“I told them I’m anyway coming to their city on 7 October for a couple of weeks (for a family meet), and I can do it then,” she said. “It’ll also save me a bunch of money on airfare.”

But Julia didn’t like that alternative, instead saying she should “come within a couple of days to make it happen.”

Georgia was rightfully annoyed at her sister’s dismissal, and wondered why she was expected to “travel on my own and do it as per their convenience.”

She also did research into the IVF egg process and told her sister that she “can’t just come and get it over with”, but Julia argued they will “figure it out and right now just want to meet with a doctor to see if they can do it.”

Julia and Georgia’s mother also put in her two cents and said Georgia should “be more understanding as they’ve been trying for years and must be in a lot of stress.”

But Georgia understood the situation and even agreed to give her sister an egg, she clarified.

“But they should either pay for my airfare or let me come when it is convenient for me,” she said. “But now, things have turned into a whole thing, and the entire family is calling me an a**hole for not going to their city to help them.”

“They are treating you like you’re just a pill for them to get pregnant”

Even though the majority of Georgia’s family wasn’t on her side, the people on Reddit certainly were.

“Considering they've been waiting a few years to get pregnant what's a few more months,” a person wrote. “They're asking for a big favour the least they can do is make sure you’re comfortable with it and not trying to expect you to drop everything for them.”

“They are treating you like you are just a pill for them to get pregnant. It is such an absurd attitude, it is insane,” said another.

“Your sister isn't very nice to you and she acting very entitled with no thought of the risk to you,” someone added.

Women who donated eggs explained the process takes far longer than Julia may realise. “I was an egg donor and the entire process took about three months,” read a comment. “There’s no way [Georgia] can just pop into an office and have them retrieve an egg that day.”

Others suggested Georgia try an IVF clinic closer to home so she doesn’t have to fly for hours on end to help her sister.

“Remind them they want something from you and you are subjecting yourself to a medical procedure for them, so it will be on your terms and your terms only or not at all,” an insightful person said.
