"She went straight for size 1"

Brittany Opetaia-Halls, 29, welcomed her two tots - one in the 99th percentile and the other who wore clothes for 12-months-olds from day one.

In June of this year, she welcomed Milana-Mae after a 24 hour labour and a natural delivery.

She tipped the scales at 4.13 kilos which put her in the 99th percentile for her weight.

Brittany didn’t even need the newborn clothing section at Kmart - she went straight for size 1.

Her older sister, Malaysia-Maree, was also in the 99th club.

She was born in 2020 via c-section and weighed 4.19 kilos.

"What are you feeding them?"

Now, at the age of four, the youngster is wearing clothes that should fit an eight-year-old.

Over the years the size of the babies has led to many comments from amazed strangers.

"When I take both of them out it's always like 'what are you feeding them?'.” she explained.

The working mum had a suspicion she would be blessed with bigger bubs while she was pregnant.

“I think I just knew they’d both be big,” she said.

“I was showing pretty quickly with both of them. My husband is very tall so in my head, I went ‘oh no!’”

Her husband, Rajan, is just over 6 feet tall.

Despite midwives insisting it was fluid during her ultrasounds, she knew that wasn’t the case.

“I knew in my head it was the baby,” she explained.

At just 20 weeks of pregnancy with Malaysia-Maree, the mum was measuring over average for that stage.

“The midwives would put me on scans every few weeks and she was sitting on that high 98th percentile,” she recalled.

"Around 36 weeks they told us she was already hitting that 99th percentile size so they gave me a few options for birth - I was measuring quite big.”

She decided her best bet was a caesarean, but it came with complications.

"Glad I got to do it"

“She actually got stuck coming out of the incision with her shoulder. She ended up in NICU for three days and after the second day, I was able to see and hold her,” she said.

"I felt horrible that my huge baby was in this room of premature babies."

Brittany wanted a more natural delivery with Milana-Mae.

"I went to 41+1 weeks with her and I was meant to be induced with her but luckily I went into labour without being induced,” she explained.

"I was in 24 hours of labour and pushed for 45 minutes because she actually got stuck coming out.”

Despite the struggle, she wouldn’t have it any other way.

"I think I was just in the moment of being glad I got to do it though,” she said.

Now her mega issue is one every parent deals with - only Brittany deals with it far more frequently.

"It felt like I'd be rotating clothes every few months. Something would fit one week and not the next,” she said.
