How to DIY pop art printmaking

There’s a vibrant pop artist in all of us. The following project draws (see what I did there) inspiration from the world of pop art.

Activity

Two by two

Fold a piece of paper in half horizontally and vertically, and then open out. You now have four windows of paper separated by creases. If you’re using a canvas or any other paper that is difficult to bend, you can simply rule the middle point horizontal and vertical lines to create the four windows.

Transparency is key

Place a transparent plastic sheet over a portrait photo. Trace the lines of the portrait using felt tip marker pens.

Wet, flip and press

Mildly dampen a sponge with water and wipe over one of the folded paper quarters. Flip the transparent plastic sheet and press to the damp paper.

Lift the plastic sheet, revealing the reversed print of your tracing.

Repeat this process three more times to fill in the rest of the paper quarters. Then set the paper aside to dry.

Final step

Colour in each paper quarter with a different crayon colour. Next you can frame your wonderful pop art.
