‘Blessing’: Identical twin sisters give birth minutes apart from each other

The Sunshine Coast twin sisters were expecting to give birth within days of each other. Their babies had a different idea.

Mum relies on nail polish to tell her twins apart

Nicole and Renee have always done things together; as identical twins, their lives are intrinsically intertwined.

Now, they’re passing the baton to the next generation by giving birth on the same day.

When the Sunshine Coast twins learned they were both expecting at the same time, they thought it was a miraculous coincidence.

Identical twins give birth on the same day

“We magically fell pregnant at the same time, which was crazy, it was just meant to be,” Nicole told The Courier Mail

The pair were supposed to give birth 10 days apart, spending their last weeks of pregnancy “nesting and waiting.”

However, both women spontaneously went into labour at the same time.

On Wednesday, Nicole started having contractions and went to Sunshine Coast University Hospital.

Renee, who wasn’t expecting the arrival of her baby for a few more days, went to Nicole’s house to take care of her sister's kids.

But as Renee was waiting, her waters broke. Renee was rushed to the same hospital as her twin, but she was completely unprepared for the birth.

Hoping to not give birth in the car, she welcomed her daughter Ruby in the hospital foyer, before she could make it to the birthing suite.

Renee, who was in active labour with her son, was sitting in the bath when she heard about her sister’s unexpected arrival.

“[I was] thinking I was going to go at least a week before because our due date was 10 days apart, but now she actually beat me by 22 minutes,” Nicole laughed.

Renee was equally surprised by the coincidental arrival but felt “blessed” to share such an important moment with her twin.

“I couldn’t believe it,” said Renee. “We’ve been laughing about it all day.”

“I reckon these girls are going to have them on the same day”

If these coincides weren’t enough, the babies aren’t only born on the same day but also weigh practically the same.

Nicole’s baby boy, Zavian, and Renee’s Ruby, are only 200g apart from each other.

Despite Nicole and Renee being completely surprised by the coincidental dates, their mum, Tracey, knew it would happen the entire time.

“I just said to my husband a couple of days ago, 'I reckon these girls are going to have them on the same day,' and yeah, sure enough,” she told the ABC

“We've got technically two sets of twins now because we've got identical twins and then twin cousins.”

The nurses at Sunshine Coast Health were overjoyed at the happy arrivals.

“I’ve never seen it happen and I’ve been a midwife for 18 years,” said midwife Nicola.
