A man has been charged with murder of an Adelaide baby who tragically died after suffering catastrophic internal injuries while in his care, police have said.

A major investigation was launched after 17-month-old Ronan Davies “suspiciously” died.

He was rushed to Adelaide’s Women’s and Children’s Hospital in an unconscious and critical condition about 6pm on Wednesday June 7.

Police said the toddler had suffered critical head injuries and “other serious internal injuries”.

His injuries were not survivable and Ronan died two days later.

South Australia Police announced detectives from the Major Crime Investigation Branch had arrested a Glenelg North man for the 17-month-old’s murder on Tuesday night.

Before he was rushed to hospital, police allege Ronan was returned to his father “by a friend who was caring for him”.

But when Ronan’s father was unable to wake him, the toddler was rushed to hospital.

“It will be alleged the arrested man inflicted the injuries upon Ronan while in his care on the afternoon of Wednesday 7 June, prior to returning him to his father,” SA Police said.

The 30-year-old Glenelg North man has been charged with murder, refused bail and will appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
