Baby name Australians don’t want anymore revealed in 2022 report

It’s been in the top spot for eight years – but Australians are now turning their back on this once very popular moniker.

A baby name parents turned their backs on is making a surprise comeback while one name has completely fallen out of favour, according to a new report.

NSW Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages released its 2022 data baby name report on Sunday, revealing the top 100 names for boys and girls in the state.

The most popular girls name was Charlotte, a jump of two places after finishing in third place for the last two years after previously holding the top spot for several years.

However, the most favoured boys name is Noah, finally knocking the long-time favourite Oliver into second position. Oliver had been number one for eight years.

NSW Customer Service Minister Jihad Dib said many special and culturally significant names had appeared in the top 100 names last year including Muhammad and Eli.

“Picking a name for your baby can be a daunting task, a once-in-a-lifetime decision forming a child’s identity and creating a connection to family, community and culture,” he said.

Blacktown and Dubbo recorded the highest number of births last year, the data revealed.

There were also 11,000 names, including those with unique spelling, given to only one child.

Interestingly, the number one girls name in 2021 Olivia fell to spot four, while Amelia remained in third position.

Isla is proving to be an up and comer, jumping to number three, up one position.

Another trend that seems to be growing in popularity is parents giving their children shorter versions of traditional names.

This can be seen in the boys names with the introduction of Charlie, in spot 10, rather than Charles. Jack, which is often short for John and James, came in sixth position – and Leo remains a firm favourite in spot three, up three positions.

Nationally, Isla was recorded as the number one baby name for girls, while Oliver scored the top spot for boys, according to McCrindle’s annual 2022 Australian Baby Names report.

However, the latest edition of the report is due to drop in a matter of days, which could see a shake-up.
