Nordstrom slammed for selling faux mud jeans for $569

THE US retailer that brought us jeans with plastic “knee windows” and a $110 pet rock in a leather pouch is now selling faux mud jeans for $569.

US DEPARTMENT store Nordstrom is getting dragged through the mud on social media for selling a pair of dirty-looking jeans for $US425 ($569).

Nordstrom’s website says the jeans have a “caked-on muddy coating” to embody “rugged, Americana workwear”.

A matching mud denim jacket goes for the same price.

Some social media users criticised Nordstrom for selling high-priced jeans that they say mocked blue-collar workers.

Mike Rowe, who hosted a US TV show called Dirty Jobs, said in a Facebook post that the jeans were an example of the country’s “war on work” and called them “a costume for wealthy people who see work as ironic”.

“Finally — a pair of jeans that look like they have been worn by someone with a dirty job ... made for people who don’t,” he wrote. “’Rugged Americana’ is now synonymous with a ‘caked-on, muddy coating.’ Not real mud. Fake mud. Something to foster the illusion of work. The illusion of effort. Or perhaps, for those who actually buy them, the illusion of sanity.”

Representatives at Nordstrom did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Efforts to reach PRPS, which makes the jeans and jacket, were unsuccessful.

Nordstrom has raised eyebrows in the past when it started selling an $US85 ($110) pet rock in a leather pouch and high-waisted mum jeans with clear plastic knee windows.

It is hard to know who the joke is on however given Nordstrom’s pet rock, which it says you can use as “a paperweight, a conversation piece or a work of art”, sold out online.
