THE owner of a new eatery and boutique beer bar in the midst of Surfers Paradise “craziness” says a recent United States research trip almost killed him.

Sacha Kanaghines, co-owner of House of Brews in Orchid Avenue, lived on a diet of beer and big feeds during a stint in Las Vegas, Texas and Los Angeles.

He combined the best of what he saw to create House of Brews and opened last month.

“We spent two weeks drinking beer and eating barbecue,” he said. “I felt disgusting afterwards, like I had eaten a sheep.

“I drank nothing but green juice for a week when I got back, just to get things moving again.”

Mr Kanaghines, 44, was joined by his brothers Dan, 42, and Ben, 38, for the trip and said they sampled food and drink from eight to 10 venues a day – four for lunch and six for dinner.

“We would order six or seven dinners and just take a bite to eat off each plate.

“They were going apoplectic asking, ‘What is wrong with the food, sir?’

“They’d be like, ‘What’s with the three weird guys in the corner?’.”

The brothers, who also have Nonna’s restaurant in Harbour Town, have employed 50 staff for the 32-tap beer bar and restaurant.

It is aimed at a more mature crowd with a menu inspired by American barbecue flavours.

Live blues will feature on weekend afternoons and novelty items on the menu include big cocktail glasses full of candy floss.

“We were looking for some wow factor. It’s just fun with sugar,” he said.

“House of Brews is a bit of an oasis on Orchid Avenue where the craziness is.

“You can come in as a 30 or 40 or 50 year old and have a beer.

“There are heaps of people in that age group kicking around here … living in the Hilton, Chevron, Circle on Cavill – and they are all flat out for places to drink.

“If the 18 to 25-year-olds come in it’s usually groups of girls. They feel safe, we have security,” Mr Kanaghines said.

They planned to open a rooftop bar space and separate streetside dining for about 50 seats next month.

House of Brews, which has a 20-year lease after a fitout costing hundreds of thousands of dollars, is open from noon to midnight daily.
