New southern Gold Coast bar opens with a sweet deal on an iconic cocktail

Did someone say $12 espresso martinis? A new bar and eatery has opened on the southern Gold Coast with an offer on an iconic cocktail you won’t be able to refuse.

DID someone say $12 espresso martinis?

Yes, this southern Gold Coast bar did, and it’s no happy hour special — they’re handing them out for the low price all day, every day.

Nobby’s Rock is a new Nobby Beach bar and eatery that opened on Thursday night in the old Fire Cue restaurant.

Owner Mitch MyIntyre, the founder of the Aquaduck company in 1996, said he wanted to create a relaxed venue for locals away from the “craziness” of southern Nobby bars.

“I felt Nobby’s was missing the local funky bar venue that had a casual, opened up environment,” he said.

“I own the building there, I bought it last year at an auction.

“We’re really keen on all the great gins that are out there, we’ve got a great variety.

“We are trying to source a lot of things local — all our beers are local, we’ve got Lost Palms on tap, they’re a stone’s throw away if we need to run out and pick up another keg.

“We’re using the bakery for supplies as well as Nobby’s butcher for the food.”

As for everybody’s favourite rocket fuel, the bar’s motto “why limit happy to an hour?” is sure to sit well with cocktail sippers.

“We figured why not give people good value for money? It’s a great drink, everyone loves it,” Mr McIntyre said.

“My whole pricing is trying to do it reasonably, not crazy mark-ups.”

The food menu was devised by fine dining chef Joel Bryant with help from Mr McIntyre and features a selection of sophisticated bar nibbles and larger dishes, including sirloin steak, gnocchi, braised lamb, arancini balls and oysters.

The interior has an intimate feel with red sleek timber decor and red mood lighting.

Nobby’s Rock is open Wednesday and Thursday from 5pm to late and Friday to Sunday from 4pm to late at 2243 Gold Coast Highway, Nobby Beach.
