OPERATORS at one of the city’s most iconic marinas are cheering a megabucks overhaul aimed at attracting more big luxury yachts.

The Bulletin can reveal the first render of what Marina Mirage owners Makris Group are labelling its most significant revamp in 30 years.

Makris have lodged a development application with Gold Coast City Council which would almost double its footprint, allowing for bigger vessels, and greater access to restaurants.

Glass Dining & Lounge Bar owner Pat Gennari said it was a long time coming and praised the upgrades, saying they would breath new life into the facility.

“It’s good the landlord is spending money on it, it needs it. For us, it will be good. It would be nice to get some new tenants that could bring more people to the centre and obviously the landlord is doing more things to the centre to make it a destination.

“The more the better. If you make it exciting for the customer they are going to come aren’t they? I look forward to it.

“It’s great for Marina Mirage and the Gold Coast. It’s good for our restaurants. We look forward to it. We’ve been waiting for this for quite some time.”

Plans including a refurbish of the existing 76 marina berths, almost doubling its size. The redevelopment would enable boats of up to 100 metres in length to moor at the marina.

The application also includes expansion of the existing boardwalk adjoining the centre’s waterfront restaurants.

Makris Group’s chief operating officer Jason Makris said he was looking forward to a new generation of superyachts docking at Marina Mirage and boosting both domestic and international tourism prospects when the market recovers.

Boat broker Keryn Spriggs, of Aquamarine Services, said the development was a “a really great thing” because the marina needed an upgrade.

Demolition is to start in coming weeks, with completion later this year.
