CHILDREN in the booming suburbs of Pimpama and Coomera will no longer have to travel far from home as the State Government announced the building of a new high school.
Coomera State High School is set to open on Foxwell Road in January 2020, with a maximum capacity of 2000 students and 165 full-time staff.
The proposed school would stretch over 8.2935 hectares of both Department of Education and privately owned land and feature a performing arts centre, sports facilities and both junior and senior classrooms.
CATHOLIC SCHOOL TO OPEN IN 2019
Queensland Teachers Union Organiser for Gold Coast Jodie McFadden said the area chosen meant there could “potentially” be a need for more schools in future.
“It’s dependant upon the land site, a lot of the newer schools with public-private construction, they don’t actually have the room to expand,” she said.
“Pimpama State Secondary College for example, no matter that the suburb is continuing to grow on a daily basis, there’s just no more room.
“Land is running out in that Coomera corridor, and I think we’ll see additional schools in Pimpama and Ormeau, then north of Ormeau.”
Coomera and Pimpama are currently two of the fastest growing suburbs in Australia, with predicted populations of 63,762 and 25,931 in the coming years.
Councillor Cameron Caldwell said he would fully support the development of more schools in the region as it continues to expand.
“Coomera is thoroughly in need of new education facilities, so I thoroughly welcome any new developments,” he said.
Pimpama State Secondary College is currently the only secondary school servicing the two suburbs, with many students often left stranded by overcrowded buses.
Minister for Education Grace Grace said the project is part of a much larger initiative spread across Queensland, and would be a vital advantage to the region.

“It’s one of four new high schools and two primary schools that the Palaszczuk Government will deliver in high growth areas across the state as part of our $308 million Building Future Schools Initiative,” she said.
“It will be a key community asset and will provide significant opportunities for learning, sporting and cultural events.
“We are investing in the future of our schools and delivering the facilities our students, and their teachers, need to make the most of their education.”
The development comes as a new Catholic school prepares to open its doors in Coomera next year.
Submissions for the proposal will be open until 24 January 2019.
