THE business partner of late stuntman Johann Ofner has spoken of the moment he found out his long-time friend had died in a bizarre accident on a music video set.
Five months on, Mat Teamoke, who co-owned lifestyle and calisthenics label AMPM with Mr Ofner, recalled his disbelief upon hearing of the tragic news.
“My heart was aching for his daughter Kyarna, that’s the first thing that went through my head,” Mr Teamoke said.
“I don’t know if we’ll really ever know what happened but there’s not a day he (Johann) doesn’t cross my mind, it comes it waves,” the Hope Island resident said.
Mr Ofner, an aspiring actor, fitness freak and father of one was accidentally shot dead on the set of a Bliss n Eso film clip in Brisbane in January, months before he was set to make his anticipated TV debut on Channel Nine reality show Australian Ninja Warrior.
Mr Teamoke is keeping Mr Ofner’s legacy alive by opening an AMPM fitness studio in Miami where regular calisthenic classes, workshops and demonstrations will be held.
“After it all went down I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with AMPM. I was between two lines of keeping this going or throwing it all away.
“It took me a few weeks to realise the best thing I could do for him was keep his legacy going and keep this alive because that was something we’d talked about a long time ago,” Mr Teamoke said.
He recalled the frantic moments five months ago when he realised Offner had been shot.
“I was away for work in south west Queensland just outside Roma and I knew he was on the Bliss n Eso set because he’d talked about it many times.
“Half way through the day I started seeing news reports a man had been shot on the set and you don’t think it could be your friend you know, but then the penny drops.”
The 30-year-old electrical instrumentation said he called Mr Ofner’s girlfriend Kati Garnett and his family to find out if his friend and business partner was the man killed but his phone calls went unanswered.
He was given the news hours later by friend Cameron Duff.
“I was in total shock and disbelief because I’d spoken to Johann that morning and everything was fine, he told me he’d call me back in the afternoon.
“I remember he posted Instagram stories about faulty props and he sort of laughed about it.
”That’s the kind of guy he was just easy going and had a unmatched passion for his work.”
