Man stunned after finding proposal hijacked

A magical proposal beneath tropical trees became an unexpected battle of the romantics when one guy seized an opportunity and things got very awkward.

A man’s heartfelt attempt at a proposal almost went horribly wrong when he arrived to the intimate set up, only to discover another couple had hijacked the scene.

Emma Robinson is an event planner specialising in proposals and intimate events at Perfect Proposals.

She recently shared a clip of a proposal in Cairns that very nearly went belly up, showing a man walking with his girlfriend through trees, all covered in twinkling fairy lights.

He was holding his partner’s hand as she was blindfolded while they headed towards the proposal site.

However he stopped short and looked confused after seeing another proposal taking place under the “Will you marry me” sign and candles he had organised – and paid for.

“We only left the set up for literally a minute to go and record the couple’s arrival,” Ms Robinson told news.com.au.

She explained that was standard as most jobs don’t require two people.

“Usually we’re there with the set up, monitoring it and, when the couple arrives, we start videoing.”

But this time, as the couple was being recorded staff noticed the bloke who they were working with looking “weird”, continuously glancing at them.

“As we looked over to the set-up there was someone who’d approached it and gotten down on one knee,” the event planner recalled.

“We thought they were just joking as we got closer we were going, ‘Excuse me, this isn’t for you guys’. We could see he had a ring.

“The girl was in shock, saying ‘Oh my god’ and was really excited.”

The employee who had set up the proposal interrupted and informed them the couple who had actually paid and organised the proposal was waiting in the wings. The bloke who hijacked the proposal then said he assumed it was a pop-up proposal spot and free for anyone to use.

Thankfully, the woman the proposal was actually intended for was blindfolded the entire time and was unaware of the drama.

Ms Robinson said it’s the first time she’s experienced an awkward run in like this while planning proposals.

Social media users weighed in, with some sharing similar experiences and some blaming the business for leaving the proposal site unattended.

“My husband organise a beachside private dining in Vietnam and when we arrived there was some random couple sitting there taking photos,” one said.

Another added: “Why did he think a pop-up proposal location was a thing?”

“I’d be so embarrassed if I was the other girl,” one said.

Someone else mused: “He probably was going to play it off that he’d set it all up for her.”

“As if no one was close by to guard it,” one person commented.

One commented: “I can imagine if you guys weren’t there, would’ve change the whole dynamic having the guy chase them off before his girlfriend takes the blindfold off. But glad it turned out well for them.”

“You should start a pop up proposal day. Set up somewhere, and be set up for the day. Open up a booking system, everyone gets a 45-minute timeslots. Have 15 minutes between each session and just pump through eight to 10 of them in a day,” one suggested.

Another said: “I wouldn’t leave that unattended anyway. Anyone can come break, steal or propose on their set.”

However Tay, the woman being proposed to, also weighed in.

“You did the best you could! Thank you so much for making my night so special,” she said.
