Burleigh Heads’ James Street will get its first rooftop bar, with plans lodged with council to create the new eatery.
The plans, lodged by Burleigh Professionals Group, will see the venue created at No. 12 James Street, the ground level of which is currently home to the Oscar Oscar hairdresser.
An extra level will be built on top of the existing structure to create 259sq m of new space for the restaurant, which will operate until midnight seven days a week.
A planning report lodged with the council reveals how “(It) will provide for a positive contribution to the locality and contribute to the character of the precinct while activating a confluence of key pedestrian laneways within the area,” the report reads.
“More specifically, the proposal seeks approval for new open air rooftop restaurant with several dining areas, including lounge areas, dry bar overlooking James Street, sunken booths and formal table service.
“The proposed development reinforces the intent for Burleigh Heads as a District Centre to develop vibrant day and night-time economy and support its function as part of the City’s employment precinct.”
The report says Burleigh was expanding beyond being a suburb which was primarily open during the day.
“The proposed development will directly contribute to the vibrancy of Burleigh through the provision of a new (rooftop restaurant) in the locale which offers both a variety of entertainment to the local community of Burleigh Heads and supports additional employment opportunities within the village centre, such is considered to complement the emerging culinary character within Burleigh Heads, in addition to the growing residential population,” the report reads.
