TOBACCO tycoon Travers ‘Candyman’ Beynon pre-empted his Freaks Unleashed party being shut down, so he bought 1000 pairs of headphones and turned the event into a “silent disco”.
Gold Coast police turned up to his Helensvale mansion just before 9 o’clock last night and demanded he shut down party after one neighbour complained.
Security told the police officers Mr Beynon was prepared for this occurrence.
Gold Coast model turned international DJ Brooke Evers told the Gold Coast Bulletin this morning Mr Beynon had got on stage and told his guests the party would not stop, but they would have to whack on a set of headphones, which they could keep at the end of the night.
“He got on stage and said ‘this party’s not gonna end’,” Evers recalled.
“I have bought a thousand headphones, so I’m going to get my amazing staff to walk through now and give every one of you headphones and we’re going to turn this into a silent party. “
And the crowd just went bonkers because we thought it was going to be shut down at 9.30pm.”
“And that’s when it go weird, because you just looked around the crowd and everyone was dancing, but there was no music.
Evers said Mr Beynon was a “legend” who was full of so many “great ideas”.
“They were really good quality, over the head, headphones,” she said.
“He knew they would try to shut it down at some point, so he turned it into a silent disco so the cops couldn’t break it up.
Evers reckons the latest Candy Shop Mansion house party put Playboy Mansion shindigs to shame — even though rain wrecked her scheduled set.
Mr Beynon, who personally hand-picks all the guests, invited hundreds to his Freaks Unleashed themed knees up which seemed to have avoided some of the issues of past years, including hospitalisations for drugs and alcohol and a bush fire which was started by a fireworks display.
Guests dressed in “freaky costumes” — and some wearing not much at all — partied until midnight despite the stormy and wet weather.
Party-goers dressed as zombies, pornstars, Maleficent, Hugh Hefner, Santa, Ronald McDonald and there were “heaps of girls on chains”.
“I have been to Playboy Mansion parties and they are not as good a Candyman Mansion parties,” Evers told the Gold Coast Bulletin.
Evers said she was meant to start her DJ set at 5.30pm but it kept getting pushed back because of the rain.
“I ended up only playing for half and hour, it was meant to be two hours,” she told the Gold Coast Bulletin.
“The equipment got waterlogged and shorted.
“The rain was the most devastating part of the evening but it didn’t worry anyone.”
Mr Beynon put on the entertainment including a topless DJ and a number of scantily clad performers, as well as the food, fireworks and drinks for everyone.
“(Travers) is so funny and interesting and he has the most unbelievable imagination,” Evers said.
“He would have spent tens of thousands of dollars on entertainers.
“His party is better than parties I’ve been to in LA.
“Everyone was in the pool ... there was not much clothing on.”
