WA home improvement company closes with $1.2 million in contracts outstanding

Another home improvements business has gone bust, with more than $1.2 million in contracts outstanding and homeowners out of pocket.

The collapse of an embattled home improvements business has left almost 100 customers out of pocket hundreds of thousands of dollars in deposits, with patios and landscaping work left incomplete.

Perth-based Western Home Improvements was officially put into liquidation on Tuesday after the Wangara company struggled to find labour to complete the $1.2 million in outstanding contracts on its books.

Insolvency firm Cor Cordis will now try to secure a replacement business to complete Western Home Improvements’ jobs which are in various stages of completion, after clients paid nearly $350,000 in deposits.

The Perth-based company told The West Australian the business had taken $175,000 in deposits for 68 patio contracts worth $715,000, with a further $170,000 received for 21 landscaping contracts worth $485,000.

Liquidator Jeremy Nipps told the WA paper Cor Cordis would seek to complete discussions started by Western Home Improvements’ directors with construction firms who could potentially complete the contracts.

Western Home Improvements’ five remaining staff were made redundant last week, with about $200,000 believed to be owed to creditors.

The company’s website describes Western Home Improvements as being “proudly West Australian”, and as being a family-owned company.

“We focus on completing the work required on your home as if it were our own,” the website states.

“We only use the best quality materials, installed with the utmost care, to produce an end result that you will be proud to call your home.”

The company was continuing to advertise works on Facebook as late as February 2023.

The closure comes a series of shock high-profile insolvencies which have left families and business across the country out of pocket.

A liquidator was appointed on May 14 to manage the closure of Tasmania-based Multi-Res Builders Pty Ltd.

Sydney plumbing company Limcora Pty Ltd told The Mercury they were still owed $100,000 from jobs completed for Multi-Res.
