Shocking CCTV footage shows the moment a pet cat was grabbed by the tail and flung through the air on a suburban street by a man who has now been convicted over the incident.
It shows the Perth man, 38, grab the unsuspecting cat, named Blossom, from behind and throw it up to seven metres onto a concrete footpath.
In the video, released by the RSPCA after the man’s conviction, the group he was with can be heard laughing as the cat crashes on the ground before it scampers away.
Perth Magistrates Court was told the man was walking with friends on Sheldon St in Piara Waters about midnight on January 16, 2022, when he spotted the cat in front of the house where it lives.
A magistrate on Tuesday accepted the man was remorseful but described the offending as “severe” as she fined the man $2000 and convicted him under the Animal Welfare act.
The man was handed a spent conviction, which is afforded in minor matters or when a court is of the view an offender is unlikely to commit the same crime again.
The pet was assessed by vets on two occasions after the incident and its owners have reported a change in her demeanour since, according to the RSPCA.
Kylie Green, an inspector manager with the RSPCA, said she was glad the cat’s owners had received some form of justice.
“Thankfully most people can see that acts such as this are downright cruel and there’s nothing clever or funny about them,” she said.
“This would have been a terrifying ordeal for Blossom and distressing for her owners to see.
“I’m glad they have all received some justice with this decision today.”
The RSPCA has urged people to report incidents of suspected animal cruelty and neglect through its hotline or on its website.
