South Australia has once again smashed its daily Covid-19 case record, despite recent modelling suggesting the peak would be lower.

There were 6091 new infections reported on Wednesday, making it the highest ever daily case number since the pandemic began.

That record was only beaten yesterday when there were 5784 cases – an increase of 307 in 24 hours.

Before that figure, the highest daily case numbers were recorded back on January 14 with 5679 positive tests.

The total number of active cases now sits just below 36,000.

Despite the increase in cases, the hospitalisations have remained consistent with 210 admissions, including 12 people in intensive care and two on ventilators.

New Covid-19 modelling released on Tuesday afternoon suggested the peak of South Australia’s expected case numbers reach about 5500.

That data was recently reviewed and recalibrated and initially predicted the peak would be more than 8000 infections per day during April.

According to SA Health, that released the University of Adelaide modelling, the data was essential in helping with the state‘s health system response.

At the time, Chief public health officer Nicola Spurrier said the modelling best predicted up to four weeks in advance but said anything further was too hard to forecast.
