Winter has arrived early on the Gold Coast, with temperatures plummeting as we head into the weekend.

The Bureau of Meteorology predicts the mercury could dip as low as 7C in coastal areas and 6C in northern suburbs on Sunday, well below the average May minimum of 15C.

In Advancetown, the temperature is forecast to go as low at 4C.

“We are seeing temperatures starting to cool down, getting into the single digits potentially over the weekend,” BOM forecaster Peter Markworth said..

“We have a fair bit of cold air moving from the south, especially since that cloud cover and rainband moves through.

“The maximum temperatures in the region should stay around the low 20 mark but we are seeing the minimums drop into the single figures.

“It’s predicted for temperatures to drop to 9C Saturday and as low as 7C on Sunday.”

Good news for those wanting to brave the cold is Mr Markworth said it is unlikely there will be rain this weekend.

“That cloud and rainband has moved away from the Gold Coast, it’s moving offshore the next couple of days,” he said.

Mr Markworth said the weather is likely to get a bit warmer to start next week,

“As we go out of the weekend those minimum temperatures will start to increase again and will sit around the low-teens by Monday,” he said.
