AT a time when most businesses are closing, one venture has managed to come back after a five year absence.
The Gold Coast Turf Club Farmers Markets set up at the Bundall facility from about 6am this morning with more than 30 stall holders ready to offer fresh fruit and vegetables, meats and honey.
Gold Coast Turf Club chairman Brett Cook said they were pleased with a 1200-strong turn out today.
“The average crowd was four to five thousand on a good day (about five years ago),” he said.
But today’s was not bad considering the situation and that we are a new market.”
Mr Cook said he personally spent about $250 at the market, making sure he purchased something from each of the stall holders.
“They were all quite pleased and there were enough people to make sure they made a profit,” he said.
The markets enforced the social distancing rules and made sure entrances and exits were separate.
People were reminded coming in to use the hand sanitiser and keep distance between people.
Mr Cook said they hoped to grow the market in the months to come, particularly once the coronavirus pandemic restrictions start to lift.
The markets start from 6am every Sunday.
